Loved Kong here!! His 132 LTHR lead all since I've been back into SOM (2001).
Think he had the lowest BA of a homer champ in hist'ry, right guys???

Didn't he do a 37/.204 or something like that to lead the NL in 1976 or thereabouts???

Something that always stuck in the back of my mind over the years (why, I'll never know...) was an old newspaper recap of a game between the Mets and Giants.  Kingman was still with SF.

The lead opened:

"Dave Kingman hit a single, triple and mammoth grand slam home run..."

Not just any old grand slam, but a "mammoth grand slam home run..."

Sounds Ruthian.  Or, like something Mark McGwire would have launched.

"Mammoth".  I love that word, and the way it attaches itself to a Dave Kingman home run.

In my mind, that ball has never come down.

As a matter of fact Seaj, the two that remind me of his homers from the modern guys the most are in fact Mac and Straw! .....what skytrailin' cloudbusters they did jettison!hahahaa!!!

'77 may have been the Mets, I think he went to the Cubbies in '78.  OK just checked baseball reference, Angels, Padres, Yankees, Mets in '77 good call on the four teams.

good call meaning good knowledge that you knew he played for four different teams didn't want you to think I was being sarcastic because sometimes written words do not translate well.

It's all good! Kingman used up those frequent flyer miles in '77. I wonder If his bags flied free?

How would Sterling, the Yanks announcer, call a Kingman homer....a ding dong by King Kong?

irony of it all is we mention Mel Allen with John Sterling in same thread. I would guess Mel is rollin in his grave as we speak

He is a far different guy than the when he used to call the Braves games on the Superstation.  Thought he called the Mets with Ralph Kiner too but I do not recall.  Hey it could be worse, Vin Scully has Charlie Steiner in his shadows although I do like Charlie.

Charlie has a sense of humor, and a knowledge of the game. I like Sterling as an announcer. I feel his DA Yankees win! and Abomb by Arod get in the way of that. Scully is without a doubt in a class by himself

Don't know if you are a subscriber to XM or MLB.COM to get the other games or even Season Ticket on dish or digital but it has been great to get the other announcer's perspective.

Too bad we were not fortunate to hear the Red Barber's or Linsey Nelson's or Curt Gowdy's more often.

Back to the replay! Astros go to Jack Murphy and take two from the hapless Pads.

Game one: Ryan in control, six k's, zero BB's, allowed six hits and two runs as Houston wins 5-2. Three run homer by Denny Walling, solo shot by Alan Ashby. Padres had a two-run triple by Alan Wiggins.

Game two: Joe Niekro took a one zip lead into the ninth, only two see a two out rally fueled by Lezcano's double and Kennedy's single to tie it. However, the error bug hit Padres as Templeton and Salazae boot routine grounders leading to two unearned runs against Lucas. Dave Smith shuts door in tenth and gets save.

Ryan now 3-4, 3.07 ERA, 87 K's.
Niekro 3-2, 2.29 ERA.
Smith 3rd save.

Lucas dropped to 1-4.
Lollar dropped to 2-5.

Padres defense has killed them all season

Padres open up a can on Vern Ruhle and the 'Stros at the Dome. Juan Eichelberger picked up his second win, as San Diego unleashed a sixteen hit attack(Richards 4, Jones 3, Kennedy 2, Wiggins 2, Templeton 2) to win 11-5. Templeton homered, Wiggins tripled, and Richards hit four singles. Eichelberger issued five BB's and struck out three. Richards also stole a base, and San Diego did not commit an error. Phil Garner went 4-5 four Astros!
