Re: Looking for 3 1980 cards..
October 3, 2009 by mjb1
Hi cards641,
I have Guerrero (LA) and Parrish (Det) from the 1980 set. They are both in good condition (the Parrish is a little better). They have been used, so they aren't mint.
I don't mind sending them to you. Let me know if you still need them.
Thanks,
MJB1
Re: Strat Team of the Month: 1946 Boston Red Sox

Great new feature. Lots of fun teams to be explored. I didn't know much about the '46 Red Sox, so it was very informative.
Great idea!
Re: The next card reissue is...
April 2, 2009 by mjb1
I agree with the '70s overload' that has been going on. I would much prefer to see seasons that weren't released at all.
My preferences would be 1949 and 1908.
Re: S-O-M announcement on the 24th
March 19, 2009 by mjb1
It's a good question.
I certainly hope that they don't do away with the cards (baseball is all I play, although do have some hockey stuff). So in my ideal scenario, they would keep producing cards yearly (including a recreated set). For out of print stuff, I would love to see a disc/pdf file with the cards that we could print ourselves. I understand the reason for not doing this (value of the original), but I think the originals would still maintain decent value, as people wouldn't be able to create the same card as S-O-M provides (or atleast I don't think I would be able to do that).
As for a disc/pdf with every card ever made, I would certainly pay money for that....how much money, I guess that depends on them. I think it would be more realistic for them to sell the seasons individually, which I think I would pay similar costs as to recreated seasons ($34)...if they were out of print. As for chevy seasons, I would probably pay half the cost of caddy (so $17). But I have no idea that is too much or too little.
S-O-M announcement on the 24th
March 19, 2009 by mjb1
Looks like there will be some kind of S-O-M announcement next week.
I read this from another site, but it's from Steve Barkan. From what I can piece together (that Steve let slip), it looks like there might be some reprinting of cards (just the 2000's ??).
This is from two different threads on that site:
Check out my reply to Bowa's Mayan calendar thread. Although I can't say anything about the announcement, that may provide a clue as to good or bad.
His reply in the previous thread:
The History Channel has done shows on this. Basically, the Mayan calendar ends on, I believe, Dec 16, 2012, and the speculation is that is the day the world "will end". Figures; make we do all the work on the 2012 and reprinted 2000 seasons, then make it all inconsequential. (I added the bolding/underlining)
I guess we can wait and see.
Re: Cut Cards vs Perforated
March 16, 2009 by mjb1
I think cards641 is absolutely correct about liking the game you grew up with. For me, it was with perforated cards, so that is my preference. I have started to pick up the older cut cards, but for a while, I was more interested in the perforated sets just because I enjoyed playing them more.
One of my favourite things of the perforated cards (post '89) is the bolding of all hit chances. I think that is what I miss most about the older cards.

I really like this idea and have thought of doing it myself. Good luck, and keep us posted if you decide to do it.

Another Canadian in the Hall of Fame?
March 6, 2009 by mjb1
Larry Walker
I don't think I ever thought he would get consideration for the Hall, but there was an article in today's globe and mail (a national newspaper) about him that mentioned the possibility of him getting in. Of course (to beat a dead horse) it compared his numbers to the recently elected Jim Rice and mentioned that he played clean in a steriod era (of course, there was no mention about playing in Coors field).
Here are his stats:
6907 at-bats
2160 hits
.313 average
383 home runs
1311 rbi
230 stolen bases
.400 ob
.565 slug
140 ops
7 gold gloves, 5 all-star games, 1 mvp (received mvp votes in 7 seasons) and 3 silver sluggers
Like I mentioned, I never thought he would get in (too short a career, lots of injuries, and Coors Field) but his numbers are fairly impressive overall.
What does everyone think?
BTW, he is coaching 1st base for the Canadian team at the WBC.

Re: Who should be in the Hall of Fame
February 9, 2009 by mjb1
I think the steriod issue will be fascinating to watch over the coming years. From my perspective, just about everyone already looks like a steriod user to me and I think we will start to see that as names slowly become released over the next few years.
I wonder whether it will just be the first batch of players caught (or assumed to be using) (McGwire, Bonds, Clemens, ect) who get left out of the Hall of Fame, when the later guys (A-Rod, ??) get let in.
Perhaps most importantly, will it change our ideas about other players who didn't use steriods. Does a guy like Will Clark all of sudden become a better player since he was clean? (I used Clark for a couple of reasons, one he was my favourite player and two, the Rafeal Palmeiro connection) What do we think of Frank Thomas now? Was he the best hitter of his generation? (Always spoke out against steriods and the only current player to speak w/ mitchell)
This will be a fascinating situation to watch over the coming years.

Hey Seajaw,
Great write-ups. I have always been fascinated with 1911, I just have hardly touched the set. I look forward to following along. I also really like the season format, it might be something I think about stealing!

Re: Who should be in the Hall of Fame
February 2, 2009 by mjb1
To me, the biggest shock of this year's Hall of Fame ballot was the fact that Tim Raines received almost no support (24% up from 22% last year). I thought he was going to increase his numbers, once people began to look at his stats. Apparently that didn't happen and I have no idea why. There is enough information out there, there are enough people making his case, yet it hasn't resonated at all. He was one of the best hitters of the 1980's, probably the best base stealer in the history of the game (based upon precentages), and one of the best on-base players of his time. Without comparing him to others in, I don't necessarily know if he should be a Hall of Famer, but he should be getting more support than that.

Re: What's Your Favorite SOM Baseball Season?
February 2, 2009 by mjb1
I have to agree, the first set always holds some special place. The first cards I saw were from 1988, however, four of us split on that set and drafted teams. I was a lefthanded hitter and just presumed that all the best players hit lefthanded, so I loaded my team with them. Of course, my first game against the oldest person in our group (who was 7 years my senior, so about 18 years old at the time) he started John Candaleria. I learned something about pitching matchups that day.
My favourite set is the first one I owned (well split w/ my brother...but it never left the house), 1989. Will Clark was my favourite player, so I liked the Giants. I also liked the Mets, and they had a good team as well (I don't know how they didn't win more in the late '80s). Being a Canadian, I also liked both the Jays and Expos' (more Montreal than Toronto) and they both had good years (the Jays better). The Tigers still had Sweet Lou and Tram, the Royals had George Brett still hitting...in NY Donny Baseball was still hitting. The A's were, to me, a dynasty (the bash brothers, Eck, Stewart, ect). That will also hold a special place for me.

Re: The Roster Sheet: Members, Introduce Yourselves!
February 2, 2009 by mjb1
Hello mjb1, or Jamie here.
I started playing S-O-M with the 1988 cards, as myself, my brother and two other friends from our neighbourhood split on the baseball and hockey sets. We really got into baseball, but never took to hockey (would have rather been outside playing). My brother and I picked up the 1989 season and that started my solo playing. I played that '89 season to death. My father was kind enough to photocopy scoresheets for us and one day he came home with a complete 1974 (w/ the 1973 A's as well) set. I guess one of his colleagues at work played as a kid and still had the set and decided to pass it along. Of course, I was still young at that point and only knew some of the bigger names (Brock, Jackson, ect). I played that set a little bit, but it mostly stayed in a drawer (thankfully not w/ rubber bands). Not only living in Canada, but Northern Ontario, we didn't have any stores that carried the game, so I didn't pick up another set until the 1995 season, which I split with a friend in University. Then I played that 1995 set to death. Of course through University, summer employment and life, strat was always in and out of my life. Sometimes I'd play a lot, then I would let it sit for a long time. My brother bought me the 2003 set for Christmas in '04 and that got me back into the game. Since then I have been playing and picking up whatever cards I can.
I am now back living in Northern Ontario, of course with the internet and ebay, its much easier to get the game. I have spent too much time organizing lately and not enough time playing, but hopefully that will change (I have my doubts, as I recently got married, and have a new puppy and my wife is expecting). I have about 20 games left to go in a 1992 Milwaukee Brewers replay and I am currently in the middle of a yearly World Series Team tournament.
The site looks great Ken!
Jamie
