Game 13: Bugle Field, Baltimore

The second game of the Baltimore doubleheader takes place at another Negro League field. Bugle Field, home of the Baltimore Elite Giants.

NL Lineups

Wilson, lf
Bell, rf
leonard 1b
Charleston, cf
Gibson, c
Lloyd, ss
Rogan, 2b
Dandridge, 3b
Hilton Smith, p

MLB Lineup

Cobb, cf
Collins, 2b
Wagner, 1b
Simmons, rf
Gehrig, 1b
Wheat, lf
Cochrane c
Sewell, ss
Nathewson, p

Cobb draws first blood in the bottom of the first with a leadoff home run. Oscar Charleston equals that feat in the next half inning with a leadoff homer of his own. Mathewson shoots himself in the foot in the fourth when he walks the bases loaded with only one out. The Negro League stars make him pay when Rogan knocks in a run with a single and Dandridge doubles in two more for a 4-1 advantage. Not to be outdone, the MLB sluggers score four in the bottom of that same inning on five singles, driving Smith to the showers. Josh Gibson ties the contest in the top of the 8th with a dinger off of Carl Hubbell but the NL give the game back in the bottom of the frame. Collins draws a bases loaded walk from Leon Day for the 6-5 lead. Cheif Bender gets the save with a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts.

The Negro Leaguers still lead the tour series 6 game to 5.

MLB Stats:
Cobb 2-4, R, 3 RBI, HR, SB
Simmons and Cochrane both 2-4, 2b
Mathewson 6 IP, 6 Hits, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3K

NL Stats:
Dandridge 2-4, 2 RBI
Gibson 2-3, 2 R, RBI, HR

Did screw up with this one, I mistakenly played the game with the Negro League as the visitors though it was played in a Negro League stadium.

The Negro League sluggers get the jump on Pennock in the first, scoring twice on back-to-back doubles from Wilson and Wells followed by a run scoring single by Mule Suttles. The score remains 2-0 until the top of four when Ruth starts the scoring for the MLB with a solo smash over the wall! Four straight singles immediately after score two more in the frame and stake them to a 3-2 lead. Willard Brown drives in Charleston in the top of the 7th to tie things up and drive Pennock from the mound for the day. Reliever Ray Brown gets tagged in the bottom of the same frame for two runs on a slam off the bat of George Sisler for a 5-4 MLB advantage. Again the Negro League fires back when Willie Wells rockets a Chief Bender pitch into the bleachers to pull within a single tally. However, the MLB bats put this one away in the eighth off of Brown and Rube Foster, scoring five times. The key blow in the inning is a two-run double by pinch-hitter Zach Wheat, which was quickly followed by a triple from Ruth.

Final 10-4. Series tied at seven games apiece.

I love a good pitchers duel! Mendez is touched for a single run in the third on a Tris Speaker solo shot. A two out double from Josh Gibson, followed by an RBI single courtesy of Buck Leonard, ties things up in the sixth. In the bottom of the 7th Gehrig, pinch-hitting for Alexander, cranks a titanic shot over the right field wall! Not messing around, the MLB brings Walter Johnson in to close the last two innnings out but he gives up a run-scoring single by Pop Lloyd with two gone to tie things up. But yet another solo home run in the bottom of the eighth by George Sisler off of relief hurler Andy Cooper gives the MLB squad the lead again 3-2. Johnson emphatically takes care of business in the ninth by striking out Dihigo, Stearnes, and Charleston in succession.

MLB now leads tour series eight game to seven.

The great Satch gets roughed up early in this one. First he gives up a solo shot to Simmons in the second and then four more runs in the third highlighted by another homer by Simmons, this one good for three runs! Suttles get two back against Marquard when he sends one over the wall in the bottom of the fourth. Meanwhile, Satch gets in a groove and gives up just one hit in the 4th through seventh innings, but the score still stands  at 5-2 in favor of the MLB stars entering the bottom of the eighth. with one out in that half Mackey reaches on an error by Wagner, a miscue that would prove very costly. A single by Suttles drives Marquard from the mound. Dazzy Vance toes the rubber and quickly gives up a sac fly to pinch hitter Jud Wilson, a harmless out that would have ended the innning scorelssly if not for the Wagner miscue. Dihigo took one for the team and then he and Suttles were driven in on a triple from Bullet Joe Rogan, tying the contest at five. Having seen enough of Vance, Carl Hubbell comes into the game to stem the bleeding. Instead, he gives up a death blow two-run home run to pinch-hitting Oscar Charleston! Rube Foster closes out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth and the negro leaguers tie the series up again at eight games apiece.

This borders on cruelty. Ruth gets the start on the mound in Fenway and shows Boston fans, yet again, what they missed out on. An unbelievable, classic pitchers duel between The Bambino and Big Bill Foster. Willie Wells singles of Ruth with one out in the first... and that is the last hit that the great Yankee slugger allows to the Negro League squad. But Foster is just as effective. He gives up a leadoff single to Cobb in the first... and then does not allow another safe hit through eight when he is pinch hit for in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of that inning Tris Speaker reaches with a leadoff base hit off of reliever Andy Cooper but is out at seond on a fielder's choice grounder from Ruth. Heilmann draws a base on balls putting men on first and second with one gone. Wagner then delivers a walk off single to score Ruth! MLB leads the barnstorming series 10 games to 9 with the 1-0 victory

Neither squad seems able to run off a string of wins, not surprising I guess. It's a nice bullpen when you can call on Walter Johnson to close out a game.

Desperation time for the negro Leauge. They need to sweep the last three games to win the barstorming tour series! They get off to a good start against Vance, pitching in his home park, in the first when Gibson doubles home Mule Suttles. They add another run thanks to a Gibson single plating Bell in the third and a third in the fourth on a Dandridge run-scoring triple. In the bottom of that fourth inning a Cochrane two-run slam cuts the lead to 3-2. Neither team really threatens until the bottom of the ninth when Smokey Joe Williams allows a lead off double by Cochrane. Trip Speaker pinch hits for Traynor and moves Cochrane to third on a ground ball to second. Then Eddie Collins drives a fly to right, where Torriente has taken over for Cool Papa Bell. Torriente makes the catch and guns out Cochrane at the plate to end the game and keep the Negro Leaguers hopes alive!

In this pivotal contest the Negro Legue draws first blood on a Lloyd sac fly int he second. The MLB bats tie things up of Foster in the fifth on a two out double by Sewell. The Negro League breaks up the pitchers duel with single runs in the 7th and 8th of Mathewson for a 3-1 advantage. Andy Cooper is a victim in relief again, however, as he is touched for two runs on run-scoring singles by Traynor and Heilmann in bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras. The score remains deadlocked until the top of the twefth when Dizzy Dean gives up two runs on a Charleston sacrifice fly and a Lloyd double. Things are not resolved yet though! Cobb homers pinch hitting with one out in the bottom of eleven and the next batter Speaker reaches on a single. Speaker then reaches third on a double by Heilmann, putting the tying and winning run on third and second with only one out. Rube Foster is liften in favor of Leon Day who promptly walks Hornsby to load the bases! Sisler slaps a grounder to Lloyd at short, who throws  out Speaker on the force at home. Ok, This is it. Final game of a tie series. Paige vs. Ruth. Yankee Stadium. Here we go!

Things start off with a bang when Willie Wells leads off the game with a home run! The MLB quickly ties things up in the bottom of the inning when Wagner drives in Ruth on a single. Amazingly Wells leads off the third with another dinger off of Ruth! But again, the MLB hitters tie things up in the bottom half on a Wagner single,v this time scoring Gehrig.

Ruth gets in serious trouble in the fifth when he gives up a double to Charleston, and triples to Brown and Johnson. He is lifted from the mound and deposited into left. Herb Pennock allows a sac fly but then strikes out Paige and Wells to minimize the damge but the Negro Leagues lead 5-2.

Things unravel for Paige in the bottom of the fifth. With one out he walks Ruth and Gehrig, then gives up a double to Wagner, scoring both runners. Hornsby immediately ties things up with a single, scoring Wagner. Another base hit by Cochrane, followed by a sac fly by Traynor gives the MLB a 6-5 advantage. Meanwhile Walter Johnson has come in to finish things up for the MLB gang. He cruises through the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth without allowing a batter to reach base. With the score 7-5 (Cobb added a RBI single in the eighth) The Big Train finally gives up a runner on a one-out single by Willard Bronw in the ninth. After a Judy Johnson fly out the Negro League squad gets some life when Ruth drops a fly ball in left, putting runners on second and third! The comeback falls short, however, when pinch-hitter Buck Leonard flys out to center to end the game and the barnstorming series. The MLB has defeated the Negro League 13 games to twelve.

MLB Stats:
Ruth 0-4, 2 R, BB, 3 K, E: Pitching 3 Ip, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 K (not one of his better days)
Wagner 4-4, 1 R, 4 RBI, 2b
Cochrane 2-4, 2b
Johnson 5 Ip, 1 H, 0 R, 4 K, W

NL Stats:
Wells 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 hr, 2 K
Brown 3-4, R, RBI, 3b
Johnson 1-4, R, RBI, 3b
Paige 7 1/3, 11 h, 7 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, L

This series was even cooler than I ever hoped it would be! I will post some final stats in a few days.
